Cameron Diaz visits ABC's "Good Morning America" in Times Square in New York City to promote her new film "Knight & Day" in a pair of draped Elizabeth and James shorts, Rag & Bone blazer and Chloe shoes.
Lorenzo wants to see that movie they're in together and Tom wishes him well with that.
Now, this provides a perfect opportunity to address something that comes up every now and then in the comments section. Namely, how can we give X a free pass for Y, but Z gets slammed for it? This came up yesterday with the Marisa Tomei post when we were asked how we could give her an OUT for a tight short dress and give Megan Fox an IN for wearing a revealing short dress. Well for one, Marisa mainly got an OUT because the dress didn't fit her correctly and Megan's did, but that's not really the point.
When we give INs or OUTs, it's not necessarily based on hard and fast rules, i.e., short dresses are always OUT. It has a lot to do with the person wearing the item, how they're wearing the item and where they're wearing the item. Megan Fox got an IN for wearing a short revealing dress because, well, that's the entirety of her image: Hot. Marisa Tomei is an Oscar-winning actress with an impressive resume of critically acclaimed performances under her belt, not to mention about an extra 20 years on Megan Fox. Different women, different images, different messages being sent. In addition, Marisa looked visibly uncomfortable in her dress and Megan was working the shit out of hers.
In other words, there are countless factors we take into consideration, like age, body type, image, level of confidence displayed, etc. ad nauseam. Why are we bringing this up now? Because tiny little rolled-cuff bloomer-style shorts are one of those items that we would consider problematic from a style POV, but in this instance, Cameron's wearing the shit out of them and looks cute as a button. It's hot as hell in NY right now and the shorts paired with the jacket and the gorgeous shoes and a tan that looks like it might not have come entirely from a bottle all combine, along with her smile, attitude and posing, to give her an IN from us. She just looks damn cute, even if from certain angles her shorts look like diapers.
Style isn't about rigid rules, as far as we're concerned. It's about the ability to wear and pair along with the ability to project poise and confidence in your outfit. The sum is always more than its parts.
